FAQs for Community Patrons

How do I get a library card?

Non-BHSU patrons can apply for a library card by filling out an application. Forms are available at the Library Information Desk. Please bring a South Dakota government-issued photo ID with you when applying for a card. Applicants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian with them to sign for the card. The parent or guardian must have a South Dakota government-issued photo ID. Library cards expire each year on June 30th. To renew your card, please verify or update your contact information with us over the phone or in person.

Where can I check out or return books?

Books must be checked out at the Library Information Desk. They can be returned at the Library Information Desk book drop or in the book drop just outside the front doors of the library.

How do I find books and other publications owned by the Library?

Search our Library Catalog to determine if we have the book you want.

Items in the MAIN BOOK COLLECTION, OVERSIZE BOOK COLLECTION, REFERENCE, and MAIN CD/DVD are located on the second floor of the library.

Items in PERIODICALS, CURRICULUM and CHILDREN'S LIT must be requested at the Library Information Desk. Current issues of select periodicals are available for in-library use in the magazine rack near the Library Information Desk.

Books in CASE LIBRARY and ARCHIVES must be used in the library in Room 015 during Case Library’s regular hours.

How do I renew an item?

You can renew books and other items:

  • E-mail:  library@bhsu.edu
  • Call: 605-642-6250
  • Stop by the Library Information Desk
  • Use your online Library Account. Your online library account can be accessed from the Library Catalog or by clicking the "My Library Account" on any page on the Library's website: https://www.bhsu.edu/library/

What is my username/password to log into the Library Catalog (Primo)?

If you are a non-BHSU patron, your username is your Library Card barcode number. If you have never logged in before, or if you forgot your password, you can have a reset link sent to the email address you signed up with: https://bhsu.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/view/resetPw?institutionCode=01SDBOR_BHS The reset page will ask for either your library card number or the email address you provided on your library card application. If you do not have this information or did not provide a valid email address with your application, please contact the Library Information Desk.

Does the Library have computers I can use?

One desktop computer is available for use by the public. Access to the computer requires a special key that can be obtained at the Library Information Desk.

Can I print, scan, or make photocopies in the Library?  There are two Campus Printers in the library: one on first floor across from the IT Help Desk and one on the second floor on the west side of the building. The printers have scanning and photocopying features. The public may print from one public-access computer, located near the Library Information Desk.  You will need a special card to access the printer--please ask at the Library Information Desk for help.

Scanning can be done for free and saved to a USB drive. Printing charges vary by size, black and white vs. color, and single-sided vs double-sided. The printer will inform you of the amount before the print job begins.

Can I donate materials to the library?

Yes. Contact Mike Tolan at Michael.Tolan@BHSU.edu for more information. If you would like to donate materials related to the history and culture of the Black Hills, please contact Lori Terrill at Lori.Terrill@BHSU.edu.
