How do I use the equipment?

Some of the resources in the Innovation Lab will be familiar enough for most folks to just pick up and use. To ensure access and availability for the more complex or technical equipment—such as laser cutters, 3D scanners, or multi-channel audio production—we plan to have trained staff monitor the space during normal building hours. If particular equipment is planned for use by a class, instructors are encouraged to come use and receive personal training on that equipment prior to the scheduled time.

To be clear, this aspect remains effectively intent. We are working to identify funding for the planned staffing. However, we do consider trained staff a vital component of the space and are working diligently to ensure this need is fulfilled.

Can I use the equipment outside of the Lab?

Maybe. The types of equipment—as well as their function and use requirements—vary widely. As a general rule, some items, like the laser cutter, must remain inside the Lab. But more portable equipment, like a 3D scanner, will be available to checkout if needed. However, a primary tenet of the Lab is “innovation”—if a compelling use-case is brought forward, unique situations can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

Will I have to pay to use the equipment?

Sadly, we will probably need to charge for use of some resources. We are currently determining structures for fees associated with the use of select equipment. Because accessibility stands among our primary concerns for the space, we want to keep these costs to a minimum; cost should not become a barrier. However, the use of some equipment—such as laser cutters and 3D printers—involves consumable materials or parts and subjects it to wear. Any fees within the Innovation Lab will be implemented purely to maintain fiscal sustainability.

That said, the Library welcomes discussions about alternative ways to approach planned course projects or other programming. For example, a department could coordinate with the Library to use their program funding to purchase 3D printing materials in bulk for exclusive use by students in a class, or an organization could organize a “laser engraving workshop,” cover cost for use of the laser cutter, and registered participants of the event can use the equipment without cost.
